A fire investigator has identified improper disposal of smoking material as the cause of a fatal fire early this morning.

One person is dead after an early morning apartment fire in the 200 block of Avenue P south. The fire occurred in a third floor suite. Upon arrival, firefighters fought the fire from the outside and interior. The fire was contained to the suite.
One person died in the fire and three others were rescued. The fire investigator on scene reports the smoke alarm was missing in the suite which most likely contributed to the death.

Just after 2:30 a.m. Monday morning, police received a report of a structural fire in the 200 block of Avenue P south. The fire appears to have taken place in an apartment complex.
Police and fire officials remain on scene early this morning and it appears the fire is no longer active. No other details or word on injuries are available at this time.
