Emergency Shelters Receive Additional Pandemic Support

Emergency shelters in Saskatchewan that serve clients referred through income assistance programs are receiving a boost in funding to help respond to pressures brought on by COVID-19. The Government of Saskatchewan will provide an additional $171,000 to help support shelters in their work to keep clients safe.

“A number of sectors have needed a helping hand during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Social Services Minister Lori Carr said. “We continue to support Saskatchewan’s emergency shelters that have done incredible work to adjust and respond to COVID-19.”

The new funding is in addition to pandemic response supports that were announced in April 2020 and will help emergency shelters meet extra cost pressures and further support staff and client safety. Funding for emergency shelters under contract with the Ministry of Social Services is approximately $4 million annually.

Organizations receiving the increase are: Lloydminster Men’s Shelter; YWCA Regina - My Aunt’s Place; YWCA Cold Weather Shelter Prince Albert; The Lighthouse Supported Living (Saskatoon and North Battleford locations); Salvation Army (Regina and Saskatoon locations); and Souls Harbour Rescue Mission (Regina and Moose Jaw locations).
