SK on target to cancel 20,000 surgeries

If Saskatchewan has experienced the worst of the pandemic and if it only takes 3 months to return to normal, officials say around 20,000 surgeries as well as other procedures will need to be cancelled. This is according to information presented to the media this week.

COVID 19 is overwhelming Saskatchewan's health care system, especially intensive care units. Earlier this month, the province cancelled several health services in order to re-deploy staff to more urgent areas. Some ICU patients have been flown to Ontario this week to help alleviate pressure on the province's ICU capacity.

In the same media presentation, five scenarios were presented based on varying health measures. Many of the scenarios show demand for ICU beds will increase before returning to more sustainable levels in 2022.
